1619NCBW Black Women Empowerment March honors the legacy of Marie C. Widman (1931-1989).
Before becoming the first Black woman elected as a San Diego County Supervisor, Monica Montgomery Steppe received unanimous approval from the council to establish the Black Arts & Culture District, which includes the landmark Marie C. Widman Memorial Park. A longtime leader in San Diego civic affairs, a housewife, and a mother of two boys, Marie C. Widman was the backbone of her local community and of greater San Diego.
